Sri Lanka Bombings

In response to the atrocities in Sri Lanka, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated their advice for travellers.

If you are in Sri Lanka and you are safe, we advise you to contact family and friends to let them know that you are safe.

If you are in Sri Lanka and have been directly affected by the attacks, please call the main number for the Embassy in Colombo: +94 11 5390639.

Follow the phone message, and select the emergency option from where you will be connected to one of the consular staff.

If you are in the UK and worried about British friends or family in Sri Lanka caught up in the incidents, please call the FCO switchboard number: 020 7008 1500 and follow the instructions to speak to an official.

Background: On 21 April 2019 there were bomb attacks on three churches and on three hotels in Sri Lanka, in central Colombo,  in the northern suburb of Colombo Kochchikade, in roughly twenty miles north of Colombo in Negombo and in the east of the country in Batticaloa. More than 300 people have been killed and over 500 injured.

Security has been stepped up across the island and there are ongoing security operations. These include controlled explosions of suspicious packages and vehicles, and the temporary evacuations of buildings. Such operations may continue for a number of days. Travellers are advised to follow the advice of the local authorities, hotel security staff and local tour companies. Passengers should expect extra security checks at public buildings and at airports.

The Sri Lankan authorities have declared a nationwide State of Emergency. Avoid crowded public areas and gatherings/demonstrations and monitor local media for developments: you should plan your movements carefully and not to travel out if curfews are in place.

Social media may also be disrupted.  Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, along with YouTube, Viber, and Snapchat, were all quickly blocked by the Sri Lankan authorities after the attacks because of concerns that social media could be used to spread misinformation or to incite further violence.

Revealed Travel is liaising with our ground agents in Sri Lanka.  Our first priority is to ensure that passengers are safe. We are also contacting travellers who are due to travel to the country in the coming months.

Sri Lanka is a small country of immense charm and impressive cultural heritage. Since time immemorial the country has been a meeting point for Eastern and Western trade. The island was known for precious stones, tortoise shells and ivory to Greek merchants and sailors from the Roman Empire and later to Persian, Armenian and Arab navigators.  Chinese cartographers mapped the island well before the sea route from Europe to India was discovered in the 15th Century.

People are friendly and engaging, welcoming travellers with a ready smile.
